Cajun Blackened Fish Sandwich
with tartar sauce and Cajun sweet potato fries

This blackened fish sandwich is full of flavor from Cajun spices and a creamy tartar sauce. Served with sweet potato fries, this will become your favorite sammy and fries combo!
Smarts: What's in Cajun seasoning? It's a mix of garlic powder, paprika, oregano, thyme, and some more good stuff!


Cajun Blackened Fish Sandwich:
  • Tilapia fillets - 4
  • Cajun seasoning - 1 tsp
  • Green lettuce - 4 leaves
  • Tomatoes - 1 to 2, sliced
  • Cooking oil - 1 1/2 Tbsp
  • Sandwich buns - 4
Tartar Sauce:
  • Mayonnaise - 1/2 cup ((sub with Greek yogurt if you prefer. You may need to thin it out with some milk unless you like it thick and creamy!))
  • Capers - 2 Tbsp
  • Lemon juice - 1 Tbsp
Cajun Sweet Potato Fries:
  • Sweet potatoes - 1 1/2 lbs, sliced into fries
  • Cooking oil - 1 1/2 Tbsp
  • Cajun seasoning - 1 tsp
  • Condiments for dipping (like ketchup) - for serving

  1. Fish - If prepping right before making, complete make steps #1-2 before returning to this prep step. Rinse and pat dry. Sprinkle both sides with Cajun seasoning and some salt and pepper.
  2. Sweet potatoes - Prep as directed. (Can be done up to 3 days ahead)
  3. Make tartar sauce - Mix mayo with capers and lemon juice.
  4. Green lettuce / Tomatoes - Prep as directed.


  1. Heat an oven to 425F (218C) degrees.
  2. Toss sweet potatoes with oil and Cajun seasoning and spread into one even layer on a dark sheet pan (for better browning). Roast in the oven for 20 to 30 minutes, until crispy. Shake once midway through.
  3. While sweet potatoes are roasting, heat a skillet or non-stick pan over medium-high heat. Add cooking oil. Once oil is heated, sear fillets in batches for 3 to 4 minutes on each side, until dark and golden.
  4. Toast buns if you want to. Assemble sandwiches with fish, tartar sauce, lettuce, and tomatoes.
  5. Sprinkle sweet potatoes with salt and pepper immediately out of the oven. Enjoy with ketchup and your fish sandwiches!
