Buffalo Tofu Hoagies
with romaine salad / ranch dressing
Ingredients
Buffalo Tofu Hoagies:
- Tofu, extra firm - 16 oz , 1/2" / 1.3 cm cubes (vacuum-packed preferable)
- Hot sauce - 2 Tbsp (Frank’s Hot Sauce is the most common brand used to make buffalo sauce)
- Water - 2 Tbsp
- Honey - 1 Tbsp
- Soy sauce, low-sodium - 2 tsp
- Garlic powder - 1/2 tsp
- Lettuce, romaine - 4 leaves , leaves torn
- Cornstarch - 1 Tbsp
- Oil, cooking - 2 Tbsp
- Hoagie rolls - 4
- Ranch Dressing (ingredients listed separately) - 4 Tbsp
Ranch Dressing:
- Green onions - 1 stalk , chopped white and green parts combined
- Mayonnaise - 2 Tbsp
- Vinegar, white wine - 2 tsp
- Sour cream - 1/3 cup (sub plain or Greek yogurt)
- Dill, dried (opt) - 1/4 tsp
- Garlic powder - 1/4 tsp
Romaine Salad with Ranch:
- Carrots - 4 oz , thinly sliced (sub shredded carrots)
- Lettuce, romaine - 6 oz , chopped
- Tomatoes, cherry - 1 cup , halved
- Ranch Dressing (ingredients listed separately) - 4 Tbsp
Prep
- Tofu - If tofu is packaged in water, press out liquid first, like in this video. Then slice into 1/2” / 1.3 cm cubes. (Can be done 1 day ahead)
- Carrots - Thinly slice. (Can be done up to 5 days ahead)
- Make buffalo sauce - Combine hot sauce, water, honey, soy sauce, and garlic powder (portion for hoagies). (Can be done up to 5 days ahead)
- Make ranch dressing - Finely chop white and green parts of green onions. Combine with mayonnaise, vinegar, sour cream, dried dill, and garlic powder (portion for dressing). Add a splash of water if the dressing is too thick. (For a very smooth dressing, blend with an immersion blender.) (Can be done up to 5 days ahead)
- Lettuce (for hoagies and salad) / Tomatoes - Prep as directed. Store separately. (Can be done 1 day ahead)

Make
- Season tofu with some salt and pepper. Toss with cornstarch.
- Heat a nonstick pan with oil over medium heat. Add tofu and cook on all sides until deep golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes.
- Pour buffalo sauce over top and simmer until sauce coats tofu and thickens, 2 to 3 minutes more.
- Toss lettuce (portion for salad) with carrots, tomatoes, and portion of dressing for salad. Season with some salt and pepper.
- Toast hoagie rolls.
- Line hoagie rolls with lettuce (portion for hoagies). Fill with tofu and drizzle with ranch dressing (portion for hoagies).
- Serve hoagies with salad on the side. Enjoy!
