with romaine salad / ranch dressing

Active: 35 minTotal: 35 min

Enjoy the spice of buffalo tofu on a hoagie sandwich with a cool romaine salad and ranch on the side.
Smarts: Tossing the tofu with cornstarch helps the sauce thicken and coat the tofu.

  1. Tofu - If tofu is packaged in water, press out liquid first, like in this video. Then slice into 1/2” / 1.3 cm cubes. (Can be done 1 day ahead)
  2. Carrots - Thinly slice. (Can be done up to 5 days ahead)
  3. Make buffalo sauce - Combine hot sauce, water, honey, soy sauce, and garlic powder (portion for hoagies). (Can be done up to 5 days ahead)
  4. Make ranch dressing - Finely chop white and green parts of green onions. Combine with mayonnaise, vinegar, sour cream, dried dill, and garlic powder (portion for dressing). Add a splash of water if the dressing is too thick. (For a very smooth dressing, blend with an immersion blender.) (Can be done up to 5 days ahead)
  5. Lettuce (for hoagies and salad) / Tomatoes - Prep as directed. Store separately. (Can be done 1 day ahead)

  1. Season tofu with some salt and pepper. Toss with cornstarch.
  2. Heat a nonstick pan with oil over medium heat. Add tofu and cook on all sides until deep golden brown, 6 to 8 minutes.
  3. Pour buffalo sauce over top and simmer until sauce coats tofu and thickens, 2 to 3 minutes more.
  4. Toss lettuce (portion for salad) with carrots, tomatoes, and portion of dressing for salad. Season with some salt and pepper.
  5. Toast hoagie rolls.
  6. Line hoagie rolls with lettuce (portion for hoagies). Fill with tofu and drizzle with ranch dressing (portion for hoagies).
  7. Serve hoagies with salad on the side. Enjoy!

Excellent. I reduced the hot sauce for our family's tastes, but everyone including kids enjoyed the sandwich. Next time I might make some extra dressing because we found ourselves dipping the sandwich in the ranch sauce.

We love this meal. I usually change it into a buffalo chicken salad but we have made it several times as lunch to bring to work. I LOVE the homemade ranch especially. I've made it countless times using the exact recipe (I use the greek yogurt option instead of the sour cream) for salads or dip to bring along with veggies for a snack at work.

We really liked this. I actually required a bit more of the hot sauce.

We subbed oven baked fries for the salad on this one.

I don't eat ranch dressing, so we didn't have that component. The sauce was tasty, easy to make recipe!
